Provincial Regulation

In Canada the regulation of electricity falls almost wholly under the responsibility of the provinces. As provinces have moved toward competition or have privatized the role of independent quasi-judicial regulators has increased. The following are the regulatory bodies with responsibility in each province:

In Ontario and Alberta grid management is the responsibility of, respectively the Ontario Independent Market Operator and the Power Pool of Alberta. No other province yet has an independent grid manger.

The federal government, through the National Energy Board has limited responsibilities for electricity. Specifically, the NEB regulates power exports and the construction and operation of international and designated inter-provincial power lines.
