Issue Summary

A safe, secure, reliable, sustainable and competitively priced supply of electricity is essential to Canada’s prosperity. Providing Canadians with the means to use electricity wisely and efficiently is pivotal to maximizing the potential of the Canadian electricity system, minimizing environmental impacts and meeting current economic challenges.

The Canadian electricity industry has long been active in promoting and encouraging Energy Efficiency programs, standards and initiatives and CEA’s Board of Directors has identified Energy Efficiency as strategic goal for the industry.


Issue Management

The Customer Council has responsibility within the Canadian Electricity Association for Energy Efficiency and is working with government and key stakeholders to foster greater emphasis on Energy Efficiency/Conservation. The electricity sector is experienced in delivering effective programs and information to their customers to help them manage their electricity consumption; have facilitated market acceptance of energy efficiency products and practices and supported implementation of efficient operating standards which help to ensure that efficient electricity consuming products are available to Canadians.  

The key Energy Efficiency priorities for the industry have been defined and summarized in an Energy Efficiency briefing paper and the Council Customer Council monitors customer energy efficiency expectations through the annual CEA Public Attitudes Survey.  Respondents have consistently named their electric utility as the organization of choice to provide information on the efficient use of electricity and to deliver energy efficiency programs.
