Issues Summary

CEA Human Resources Committee

The electricity industry faces immediate and long-term workforce challenges.  Specifically the pending retirement of a significant number of knowledgeable, experienced workers, an insufficient number of skilled replacement workers exacerbated by low awareness about career opportunities in the electricity industry.  As well, the sector is experiencing   increased competition from across all sectors of the Canadian labour market for key skills.

In response to these and other HR challenges, CEA’s Board of Directors formed the CEA Human Resource Committee and tasked the Committee with advising CEA on an industry human resources strategy.  The HR Committee reports to the Board of Directors and is comprised of senior human resources professionals from member companies.

The HR Committee’s vision is to: Shape the future of our companies through innovative people strategies.

In 2010 the HR Committee identified three key priorities:
  • To ensure governments are well informed about the current and future HR requirements of the industry.
  • Develop and share strategies to address emerging HR issues and trends that affect the Electricity industry.
  • Continue to provide on-going input into the priorities and activities of Electricity Human Resources Canada which is funded through the Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) Sector Council program.

Training Network

Created in 2007, the CEA Training Network, reports to the HR Committee. The purpose of the Network is to provide a forum for utility training and development professionals in Canada to share best practices; key learning findings and to develop long term strategies for technical and leadership training, thereby enhancing utility worker skills and ensuring the safety, reliability and effectiveness of our electrical operations.
