Aboriginal Relations
Industry Response | Issue Management | Resource LibraryIndustry Response
The Canadian electricity industry has built a solid relationship with Aboriginal communities based on trust, respect and mutual understanding. CEA members are committed to informing and consulting Aboriginal communities at an early stage with respect to planned activities and projects that will have an impact on them. CEA members are building on the success of existing relationships by pursuing direct meetings and consultations to help local utilities and Aboriginal communities. Specifically, member utilities are focusing on increasing employment and contracting opportunities for Aboriginal peoples. The electricity industry supports educational opportunities for Aboriginal people to provide a well-trained source of employees for the industry.
In addition, CEA is a member of the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business (CCAB), a national nonprofit organization which helps facilitate sustainable relations between the Canadian business sector and First nation, Inuit, and Metis people. CEA is also a member of the Conference Board of Canada’s Council on Corporate Aboriginal Relations (CCAR), an executive network that helps corporate Aboriginal relations executives build relationships with Aboriginal groups and businesses across Canada.
We are confident that the CEA member companies can do business with the Aboriginal peoples of Canada to our mutual benefit. With respect for their often-unique historic and cultural link s to the land, waterways, and natural resources of Canada we are committed to working with Aboriginal communities as we meet the electricity needs of all Canadians.
