Public Attitudes Research

Since 1990, CEA has operated a cooperative annual project among Canadian electric utility companies to measure public perceptions of utilities and the issues facing the industry. The detailed results are for the exclusive use of member companies.

CEA Public Attitudes Research provides member companies and the association with national comparative information on the views of Canadian electric utility customers concerning strategic issues.

The research project also provides members with a very cost-effective method of achieving their own company research requirements through a cooperative research vehicle.

The research provides:

  • Critical measures of performance
  • Identification of emerging issues
  • Relative priority and criticality of issues
  • Validation of positions on issues

For CEA members, CEA’s Public Attitudes Research is the only source for comprehensive comparative data, at a very low cost.

The research provides CEA with the ability to identify, understand and track the issues of most significance to the industry, and measure the degree to which efforts to achieve public policy objectives are being met.

The results of the 2009 survey suggested a downturn in overall satisfaction in a range of areas, and perhaps as a result of the economic downturn, increased sensitivity and concern over rates and price issues. For example, for the first time since CEA began asking trade-off questions, both price and reliability are seen as more important than the environment; also a first, price is regarded as more important than reliability.
