The Grid 2018

Electricity Canada turned 127 this year. Over that period, we have witnessed transformative changes in our environment, country and electricity sector. And that change continues at a pace that is at times alarming.

We know that energy is the bedrock upon which the Canadian economy is built. The electricity sector employs over one million people, representing 10% of Canada’s GDP. The “first” 10%, I would say, as the remaining 90% of Canada’s economic activity relies on reliable, safe and affordable energy.

Every day Electricity Canada members demonstrate excellence in service, responsiveness and innovation. Whether it’s a member using best practices to protect our environment and promote biodiversity; or the implementation of technologies to reduce our carbon footprint. This is happening with the backdrop of meeting ambitious GHG reduction targets set out by the federal government.

But it’s not just enough to talk about it.

That is why Electricity Canada proudly unveiled its Canadian Electricity Centre of Excellence, to recognize, showcase and celebrate the ingenuity that continues to move Canada towards a greener, more sustainable energy future. Visit electricity.ca/lead/centre-of-excellence to see what our members are doing, often behind the scenes, that not only ‘keep the lights on’, but does so in a socially and environmentally responsible way.

Today, Canadians enjoy one of the world’s most reliable, sustainable, and affordable electricity systems. And our members’ commitment to excellence and innovation will ensure that the grid of tomorrow will meet our environmental, social and clean energy obligations.

Please join me in recognizing and celebrating their transformative contributions.
