CEA Celebrates Sustainability as Government outlines Net Zero by 2050 Framework

Ottawa (November 26, 2020) –Today, the Canadian Electricity Association (CEA) honours electricity companies and their business partners for demonstrating the innovation, leadership and transformative thinking that is critical for creating a sustainable electricity industry. On November 19, the Government outlined its plans to move forward with a Net Zero by 2050 framework. CEA’s ongoing sustainability efforts will continue to play a central role as Canada moves to decarbonize its economy.

The Sustainable Electricity Awards will be presented during the 2020 Virtual Powering Partnerships Summit to recognize members for their outstanding achievements in sustainability and corporate responsibility over the past year.

“Customers expect that the electricity powering their lives is safe, sustainable and reliable and that is our priority. These awards give us a chance to celebrate our members who keep these practices top of mind, while ensuring the lights stay on”, said Francis Bradley, President and CEO of the Canadian Electricity Association. “We are extremely proud to be leaders in the clean energy transition, paving the way to Canada’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.”

Sustainable Electricity is a mandatory sector-wide initiative implemented jointly by CEA and its members that promotes the integration of sustainable, responsible policies in business decision-making, and continuous improvement of environmental, social, and economic performance.

This program allows utilities to reassess and continuously improve their practices year after year. The initiative is built on a foundation of a thorough and rigorous process involving all electricity member companies, as well as insight and leadership from a diverse Public Advisory Panel. For the first time in the program’s 23-year history, the majority of the industry experts on this Panel are women and are led by the first ever female chair, Clara Clairman, President and CEO of Plug ‘N Drive.

The following recipients are being honoured with Sustainable Electricity™ awards:

Award for Advancement of an Integrated Approach to Sustainability: AltaLink and PiikaniLink L.P. and KainaiLink L.P.

Award for Commitment to Continuous Improvement through Projects, Programs and Initiatives: Nalcor Energy

Award for Leadership in External Collaboration and Partnerships: Ontario Power Generation
