Genesee Energy Centre: the heart of Alberta's decarbonized future

Capital Power is innovating power generation to dramatically reduce emissions and deliver reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy. In Alberta’s industrial heartland, the Genesee Generating Station demonstrates the game-changing innovation required to decarbonize thermal power generation. Genesee has provided reliable baseload coal generation for decades and is undergoing a $1.1 billion transformation to move off coal 6 years ahead of legislative requirements.

To do this, Capital Power is repowering two of the three existing units with best-in-class natural gas combined cycle technology and converting the third unit from supercritical coal technology to operate exclusively on natural gas. The repowered units will be capable of delivering up to 1,360 MW of reliable capacity for Albertans while delivering a 3.4 million tonne reduction in CO2 relative to 2019 levels – representing a 60% reduction in emissions despite a 40% increase in installed capacity from repowering. The high efficiency of the units will result in another 1 million tonnes of emission reductions on Alberta's grid.

Following repowering, the $2.3 billion Genesee CCS project is slated to further reduce emissions and optimize the facility to provide flexible, dispatchable power for decades to come.

The project is currently undergoing a front-end engineering and design study and is expected to capture up to 3 million tonnes of CO2 per year as early as 2027. Capital Power has partnered with Enbridge to sequester the carbon at their Open Access Wabamun Carbon Hub and is committed to securing Indigenous participation in this project.

Together, these projects represent a 6.4 million tonne reduction in CO2 – positioning Genesee as a near-zero emitting source of reliable energy and the heart of Alberta’s decarbonized future.
