Northern Transformer and its Partners: Driving Canada’s energy forward
Since 1981, the relationship between Northern Transformer Corporation and Hydro One has stood as a model of long-term collaboration in Canada’s energy sector. More than four decades later, this strategic partnership continues to power the province, evolving with the times, expanding in scale, and deepening in impact.
Now, the partnership enters a bold new chapter with the development of Northern Transformer’s new advanced manufacturing facility in Innisfil, Ontario, set to open in 2028. Built for the manufacturing and testing of large power transformers, this facility represents a shared investment in Canada’s energy future.
A strategic partnership built over time
Northern Transformer has long been recognized as a trusted partner capable of delivering high-performance, locally manufactured transformer solutions. Beyond utilities, the company also supports nuclear generation, renewable energy, heavy industry, mining, and petrochemical sectors. This broad market expertise enables the company to develop specialized transformer solutions that meet the unique demands of each industry while maintaining the highest standards of quality and reliability.
This enduring relationship perfectly reflects Northern Transformer’s guiding principle: “Building Long-Term Mutually Beneficial Relationships.” It is more than a slogan; it is a commitment to collaboration, continuous improvement, and shared success across generations.
The Innisfil Plant: Powering the next generation
As electricity demand grows and infrastructure ages, Ontario requires more high-voltage, high-capacity transformers to support grid modernization, electrification, and clean energy expansion.
To meet this challenge, Northern Transformer is building a new 17,000 square metre (183,000 square foot) advanced manufacturing facility in Innisfil, scheduled to begin operations in 2028.
This world-class facility is purpose-designed for the manufacture and testing of large power transformers ranging from 230 kV to 500 kV class, with a power-handling capability of up to 750 MVA. Once operational, it will be one of the most advanced transformer plants, positioning the country to meet future energy demands with locally engineered and built equipment.
The new facility is not only about capacity, it also represents a commitment to innovation and sustainability. Built with modern environmental standards in mind, the plant will integrate energy-efficient systems, advanced testing technologies, and streamlined production processes to minimize waste and reduce environmental impact.
Additional support through industry collaboration
While Hydro One remains Northern Transformer’s primary partner, the company is also proud to have worked with other key players in Canada’s energy ecosystem, including Ontario Power Generation (OPG) and Bruce Power.
These additional partnerships reflect the growing recognition of Northern Transformer’s capabilities and its role in supporting critical transmission and nuclear generation of assets across Ontario. In particular, its collaboration with the nuclear energy sector has demonstrated the company’s technical expertise, reliability, and ability to meet the rigorous standards and demanding timelines required for such critical environments.
Supporting Canada’s energy transition
Canada is at a turning point in its energy evolution. The push for electrification, clean energy integration, and decarbonization has placed new demands on grid infrastructure. Large power transformers are a vital component in enabling this transition, connecting generation with transmission and ensuring reliable power delivery to millions of Canadians.
The expansion will enable Northern Transformer to increase production, shorten lead times, and provide fast, flexible Canadian-built solutions to utilities, nuclear operators, and industrial sectors. Manufacturing in Ontario also reduces reliance on imports, strengthens supply chains, and supports local economic growth.
Driving Canada’s energy forward
Northern Transformer has built a legacy of innovation and collaboration, working alongside Hydro One, OPG, Bruce Power, and other key partners to deliver reliable, resilient, and sustainable energy solutions. With the upcoming Innisfil facility, the company is ready to meet Canada’s growing energy needs, strengthen local manufacturing, and support a cleaner, more resilient power grid—showcasing the power of long-term partnerships in shaping the country’s energy future.
