Electricity Canada on the Alberta-Federal MOU on Clean Electricity Regulations

(Ottawa, November 27) Provincial Electricity system operators are best positioned to make the decisions that ensure a reliable and affordable grid. That’s why Electricity Canada is pleased to hear the announcement today that the Government of Alberta and the Government of Canada have developed a Memorandum of Understanding that will begin a path to the suspension of the implementation and management of the Clean Electricity Regulations (CERs) in the province.

This agreement gives Alberta the flexibility to manage its system using existing provincial regulatory tools while keeping sight of national goals. Clear, predicable rules will encourage investment in generation to build the capacity needed for Canada’s economic growth.

It is equally critical that the regulatory framework supports load growth. Electricity demand is expected to rise significantly as transportation, heating, and industry electrify, combined with the growing electricity requirements of new data centres across the province.

Electricity Canada looks forward to working with Canada’s electricity providers to advance a clean, reliable, and affordable electricity system across the country.
