Electricity Canada welcomes changes to PCB Regulations

Ottawa (December 31) Electricity Canada welcomes the publication of updated regulations phasing out Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) from the electricity system. The new regulations extend the PCB phaseout deadline to December 31, 2026. They also create a case-by-case extension system for specific equipment beyond that date where replacement is not technically or economically feasible. Previously, all equipment with PCBs needed to be removed by December 31, 2025. This announcement reflects commitments made in the government’s Red Tape Reduction Progress report.

“Electricity companies have already removed the vast majority of PCBs. Supply chain constraints and operational realities mean that the remaining PCB-containing equipment could not have been removed in time without significant impacts to reliability and public safety,” said Francis Bradley, President and CEO of Electricity Canada. “These changes provide the flexibility needed to safely operate and grow the electricity system while continuing the PCB phaseout.”

Canadians rely on safe, reliable and affordable electricity to power their homes and businesses. Canada benefits from one of the cleanest grids in the world, with more than 80% of Canada’s power already being non-emitting. Demand for power is only increasing; Canada will see demand double by 2050. It is essential that federal policies support system growth.
