Electrical Safety Authority

The Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) is Ontario’s independent regulatory body responsible for administering and

enforcing electrical safety across the province. Its main job is to reduce the risk of electrical hazards—like fires, shocks, and equipment failures—by ensuring that electrical products, installations, and work practices meet the standards set out in Ontario law (notably the Ontario Electrical Safety Code).

In practice, the ESA:

  • Inspects electrical installations in homes, businesses, and industrial settings
  • Certifies and regulates Licensed Electrical Contractors and Master Electricians
  • Investigates electrical incidents and unsafe products
  • Provides public education and safety awareness programs
  • Enforces compliance through audits, orders, and penalties when needed

The ESA exists to protect people, property, and communities by making sure electricity is used safely and responsibly throughout Ontario.
