Statement on new electricity major projects

Electricity Canada applauds today’s announcement from the Major Projects office. This marks meaningful momentum toward meeting Canada’s projected electricity demand while driving economic growth.

Today’s news that the Iqaluit Nukkiksautiit Project is being advanced to the Major Projects Office is significant. Indigenous-led initiatives like this hydroelectric project for Nunavut are essential steps toward improving energy security in the north and shifting communities off diesel-generation.

The North Coast Transmission Line project also reflects the government’s commitment to accelerating intraprovincial transmission in partnership with First Nations communities. The project will support industrial development in northern British Columbia—including mining, hydrogen production, and port expansion—helping to strengthen Canada’s export capacity and overall economy.

Electricity Canada welcomes this news, and we are pleased with the focus of the Major Projects Office on electricity projects. We have much to build in the coming years to meet Canada’s growing demand.
