Statement on provincial energy corridor agreement and intra-provincial transmission project funding

The way to unlock future investment in industry and business is by moving more electricity within provinces, and to move electricity between provinces.

Today’s announcement of a joint agreement by the governments of Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Yukon, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and the Northwest Territories to advance new electricity transmission projects and strategic interties across Canada is an important piece of nation building. East-West transmission is important: Electricity Canada recently commissioned a report with Deloitte on the importance of strengthening interties. We are pleased that Canada’s provinces agree.

Electricity Canada believes that this announcement will benefit Canadians for generations. Better East-West interconnections will support Canada’s economic growth, strengthen provincial trade and support Canada’s energy independence.

We also applaud the Government of Canada’s announcement yesterday that it will provide funding for intra-provincial transmission projects in Saskatchewan and British Columbia. This is an important step in strengthening Canada's mining sector and for boosting Canada's economic growth through a resilient and reliable electricity grid.  Electricity Canada supports the use of the First and Last Mile Fund  (FLMF) to build more transmission and expand the Canadian electricity grid.

Canada needs to more than double its grid capacity by 2050. Building the infrastructure to transmit electricity within provinces and across Canada is essential to this.
