Canada’s electricity demand is going to double in the next 25 years. This build is going to require a massive influx of trained workers, at a time when many skilled labourers are reaching retirement age. The 2026 Spring Economic Statement addresses this gap. The government is planning to recruit, train and hire 80,000 to 100,000 new Red Seal skilled trade workers by 2031 to support housing, infrastructure, and defence projects.
Building a clean, affordable, and dependable electricity system requires real collaboration between all parties. We look forward to continuing to work with the federal government as it engages with provinces, territories, Indigenous partners and other stakeholders through its announced electricity discussion paper. The federal government will need to play an important role in doubling the capacity of Canada’s electricity grid.
